Sunset Beach Resort Montego Bay Jamaica reviews
Sunset Beach ResortI'm not sure why a lot of people don't like this place. the location, food and service is comparable to a number of resorts i've been to in Cuba, Mexico and Cost Rico.
I took Thomas Cook/Jazz airlines on the gold service. Definitely worth the gold service you get advanced seat selection you don't have to wait in line at either airport and your bags come off first among other things.
The resort is about 1/2 hour from Montego Bay airport. The transfer was a bit of an issue the Sunquest rep shows you to the bus, maybe 100 yards and then immeditely asks for a tip. The bus driver waited for over 10 minutes so people can have a cigarette. He also wanted a tip, I hope he got one from the people you smoked.
When arriving at the resort(10pm) my room was ready immediately so I got 2 electronic keys. I went to my room and realized they didn't give me a safe key. I went down to ask and were told they didn't have any and to come back tomorrow. Electronic safe keys would solve this problem. They also didn't give me a pool card. There was a really nice girl at the pool hut who gave me a towel when I went to ask.
The room was OK. You can drink the water from the tap in the room. There's no bar fridge or clock (i used my watch). I had a great ocean view in one of the apartment type buildings. The rooms are a bit dated in that the ceramic was coming off the tub, the drawers stuck and the bathroom lighting was the flouresent tube type. You could hear every noice from the hallway. That being said the tv had a lot of english channels, there was always hot water and the room was clean.
In the morning i got my safe key. The only issue i have with the lobby is that there are 2 lines. If someone wanted to jump the queue they could stand in the shorter line. I then went to the Sunquest orientation. Also known as how many excursions can I sell within an hour and a bit of info(nothing new all of the tour operators do this). When I went to book my excursions peopIe just stood around there was no ropes and a couple of people just jumped the queue. I went on 3 excursions, adventure sea, horseback riding and river tubing. I would have liked to snorkel more on the adventure sea but this was the better excursion. The others were OK. The issue I had here before I booked the adventure sea exc. I spoke to the guy who ran it. After I booked the excursion for Mon. I just happened to see the guy and he asked me what date I booked for i said Mon. he then informed the Sunquest rep who said OK and changed the date to Tues.???
You get the ala carte reservations at the desk where the hotel sells excursions. I decided not to eat at the ala cartes. I reserved the Italian and Asian. I eventually gave them back as I did not feel comfortable eating on my own in the buffet never mind the ala carte.
They have 2 places to eat if you don't do the ala cartes. The buffet and the grille. I ate at both and had no issues all week. The food is pretty average and for the price pretty good actually. A number of the people that served the food were pretty nice.
I had some issues with the waiters, probably because I was on my own. One time I got up after having my soup I came back and someone else had taken my table. The next day I mentioned this to the waiter. I didn't lose my table but he cleared my silverware and wine away when I went to get my entree after my salad. I eventually figured out that to lean my chair against the table seem to have worked. I'd would have been nice if they would have told me that. Also even after that issue I always had to ask for water, wine, coffee. They would just walk by me. (FYI I do tip because I think the people in these countries could use a bit of money) I don't expect better service.
The activities on the resort are really pretty good. They have a water park with slides and lazy river, snorkelling and a nice beach. The weather was warm and nice it rained 5 mins once. Sometimes it was bit cloudy and windy.
